Berlin experiences since his setting up in the 13th century a history full of change. In comparison to other European towns Berlin at the age of not even 800 years is a young town, however, her history is unique. Both founder's towns Cölln and Berlin united in 1307 to a union. In 1701, after the selfcoronation of elector Friedrich III to king Friedrich I in Prussia, Berlin climbed up to the royal capital and seat of power. In 1806-08 Napoleon's troops took the town; after the victory with the national battle of Leipzig the quadriga annexed by Napoleon was brought back in 1814 again to the Brandenburg Gate.
In following decades originated the splendid classicistic constructions of Schinkel and the artistic parks of Lenné. Since middle of the 19th century the economy experienced a strong impetus, the population grew rapidly. After 1871 when Berlin had become a capital of the German empire the construction boom and economic boom increased in the early days, Berlin grew to the million town. The heavy defeat in
the First World War overthrew the empire and the capital in 1918 in a deep crisis from which the republic was exclaimed. In spite of more difficult more financially conditions and revolutionary riots the cultural life blossomed during the twenties years; with innovative theatrical stagings, glittering film premieres, vaudeville theatres rich in tempo and the incomparable nightlife Berlin became the centre of "Golden Twenties". With the assumption of power of the National Socialists in 1933 the pursuit of the Jews, communist, homosexual, member of the opposition and many other put one.
After the terror of the Nazi dictatorship and the end of the second world war the town lay in 1945 in remains. The city was split on four victorious powers the Soviet Union (east), the USA (southwest), Great Britain (west) and France (northwest). With the Berlin blockade in 1948 the town became the match ball of the Soviet-American conflict; Americans and Britons supplied three west sectors about the "aerial bridge" with "raisin bombers". In east Berlin and Berlin - West the reconstruction began. The construction of the Berlin Wall on the 13.8.1961 sealed the division of the town and separated her population.
The town celebrated when on the 9.11.1989 the wall fell. After the reunion in 1990 Berlin became the seat of the Federal Government, on the 19th of April, 1999 in anew decorated Reichstag her first plenary session held. The Reichstag with the new glass dome became the attraction for Berliners and tourists from all over the world. Berlin with a rushing party at the Brandenburg Gate celebrated the millennium change. Since then has changed in Berlin a lot. And Berlin will also remain furthermore in movement.
